Sound Transmission Class (STC) ratings establish how much noise reduction occurs through a partition (such as a window.) STC is roughly the decibel reduction in noise based on a logarithmic scale.  STC ratings apply to almost every aspect of buildings–windows, doors, walls, floors and ceilings.

Most homes built over 18 years ago used single-pane windows which provided STC ratings of 15-20. Typical dual-pane windows average 24-29. An increase in sound of just 5 dB is clearly noticeable; a 10 dB increase doubles perceived volume.

Use the audio player on the right to hear the difference of various STC levels coming through windows. Please set your speakers to a low volume before beginning.

Serious Materials has implemented its field-proven quiet engineering technologies to manufacture a remarkable product line that spans STCs of 35 to 42, providing the ultimate quiet environment and reducing noise by up to 85% over other windows.
